Pipe Organ Encounters is an educational outreach program of the American Guild of Organists. Major funding for Pipe Organ Encounters is provided by the Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America. Additional support is provided by the American Institute of Organbuilders and the Jordan Organ Endowment. POE scholarships are provided by the AGO New Organist Fund.

An Overview

POE is designed for teenagers, ages 13-18, who have achieved an intermediate level of keyboard proficiency. Previous organ study is not required. Special consideration with regards to age and training may be allowed by the POE Committee on an individual basis.

POE Highlights

The Wichita POE will include daily organ lessons (one teacher for every two participants), workshops, and a final participant recital. Other activities will include daily recitals by accomplished organists and field trips (a tour of tracker organs on the plains). Topics to be covered may include Hymn Playing and Introductions, Organ Registration, Theory, and Organ Building.

*Refund Policy: Cancellations postmarked prior to May 20, 2023 will receive a full refund less a $25 processing fee.

Faculty Members

Faculty will include distinguished concert organists and church musicians, including Dr. Michael Bauer, Dr. Tyler Boehmer, Seth Bott, Lynne Davis, Donna Hetrick, Rosi Penner Kaufman, Shirley King, Dr. David Pickering.

Accommodations/Travel

Participants will be housed on the campus of Wichita State University – Shocker Hall. All rooms are double occupancy. The registration fee covers housing, all meals from Sunday dinner through Friday lunch, and special event costs. Transportation will be provided to and from private lessons, recitals, and special events. Adult supervision will be provided at all times.

Wichita is easily accessible via Interstate 35, as well as the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport.
